Prague Castle, known in Czech as Pražský hrad, sits high on the hill above the Vltava river and the red roofs of the old town. Founded around 880 AD by Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid Dynasty, expanded under the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in the 14th century and again under the Habsburgs, the complex is officially the largest ancient castle in the world according to Guinness World Records — an irregular polygon roughly 570 metres long covering 7.28 hectares. Today it is still the official seat of the Czech president. Booking a Basic Tour (Circuit A) online is the only way to skip the busy ticket queues at the gates: timed entries sell out daily in summer. For planning, see our visitors guide, the latest opening hours and our best time to visit page.

Why book with us

The smartest way to visit Prague Castle

Skip the Line

Walk past the ticket-office queues at the Second Courtyard or Golden Lane gates with a pre-purchased Basic Tour voucher. Queues at the castle ticket offices regularly reach 30–60 minutes in summer — pre-booking is the difference between a relaxed visit and a half-hour wait in the sun.

Audio Guide

Add the official 3-hour audio tour in 11 languages — narrators walk you through the Vladislav Hall, the tomb of St. John of Nepomuk in St. Vitus, and the tiny goldsmiths' cottages of Golden Lane where Franz Kafka wrote The Country Doctor.

Free Cancellation

Plans change. Cancel up to 24 hours before your visit for a full refund — no questions asked, no fees, no fine print, no awkward emails.

Mobile Tickets

Show your voucher directly from your phone at the security checkpoint at any of the three castle gates. No printing, no paper, no exchange at a window — straight in.

A thousand years of European history on a single hill

Prague Castle is not really a single castle at all but a whole walled town on a ridge — palaces, churches, courtyards, gardens, a basilica, a Gothic cathedral and a row of medieval cottages all enclosed inside a kilometre and a half of ramparts. According to Guinness World Records, it is officially the largest ancient castle in the world: an irregular polygon roughly 570 metres long and 130 metres wide, covering 7.28 hectares — about ten times the footprint of Buckingham Palace.

Founded by Prince Bořivoj of the Přemyslid Dynasty around 880 AD, expanded into a Gothic masterpiece by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV in the 14th century, remodelled by the Habsburgs and rebuilt repeatedly across the centuries, the complex has been the seat of Bohemian kings, Holy Roman emperors and now the Czech presidents continuously for more than 1,100 years. Stand in the Third Courtyard at any moment of any day and you are standing where Charles IV stood when he laid the foundation stone of St. Vitus Cathedral in 1344.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know before your visit

How much are Prague Castle tickets?
The Basic Tour (Circuit A) is 450 CZK (~€18) for adults, 300 CZK (~€12) reduced for under-24s, seniors 65+ and students with ID, and 950 CZK (~€38) as a family ticket for two adults plus up to five children under 16. Circuit B is 350 CZK. The grounds, courtyards and gardens are free.
Do I need to book in advance?
Strongly recommended. The castle ticket offices regularly have 30–60 minute queues in summer, especially from May to September. Pre-booking skips them entirely. See our best time to visit page for quieter slots.
Where exactly is Prague Castle?
On the Hradčany hill above the Vltava river. The address is Hradčany, 119 08 Prague 1, Czechia. The nearest metro station is Malostranská on Line A (green), a 10-minute uphill walk via the Old Castle Steps. Tram 22 normally stops at Pražský hrad — but note that from 21 March to 17 July 2026, that line is suspended for track reconstruction and you should use Pohořelec instead. Full directions are on our visitors guide.
How long should I plan for the visit?
Most visitors spend 3 to 4 hours inside the complex. With an audio guide, allow 4 to 5 hours. The Basic Tour ticket is valid for two consecutive days, so you can split it between a morning visit to St. Vitus and the Old Royal Palace, and a second afternoon for Golden Lane and the Basilica.
What does the Basic Tour ticket include?
The Old Royal Palace (including the spectacular Vladislav Hall), St. Vitus Cathedral (full access including the choir, crypt and viewing barriers), the Romanesque Basilica of St. George, the Story of Prague Castle exhibition, and Golden Lane with Daliborka Tower. Each interior can be entered once over two consecutive days.
Can I take photos inside?
Yes in most interiors, but not in the Story of Prague Castle exhibition, the St. Vitus Treasury, the Powder Tower or the Castle Picture Gallery. Flash photography, tripods, selfie sticks and drones are banned everywhere. The full list of restrictions is on our rules & regulations page.
Is Prague Castle wheelchair accessible?
Most of the complex is. The courtyards, St. Vitus Cathedral (via a ramp at the side entrance), and the Basilica of St. George are fully step-free. The Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane have some uneven cobblestones and a few steps. Wheelchair users and one companion enter free. See our accessibility page for detailed routes.
Are children free?
Children under 6 enter free. Children aged 6–15 are included in the family ticket (950 CZK for 2 adults + up to 5 kids). Students under 24 get the reduced 300 CZK rate with ID. See free & reduced tickets for the full eligibility list.
When is the Changing of the Guard?
The main ceremonial Changing of the Guard with fanfare and flag ceremony happens at 12:00 noon at the First Courtyard (Matthias Gate). Smaller changes happen every hour from 07:00 to 20:00 in summer (or 07:00–18:00 in winter). It's free to watch — arrive 10 minutes early to get a spot near the gate.
Can I combine the visit with other Prague attractions?
Yes — Strahov Monastery is a 10-minute walk uphill, the Lobkowicz Palace is inside the castle complex itself (separate ticket), and Charles Bridge is 15 minutes downhill. Petřín Hill with its lookout tower is also nearby. Plan the castle for a morning and Malá Strana for the afternoon for a full but unhurried day.
